Oprah has chosen Wild: From Lost to found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Strayed as her first pick in the Oprah's Book Club 2.0.
Wild: From Lost to Found on the
Pacific Crest Trail is a memoir of a young woman in her twenties
who loses the mother she adores. The death sends her into a downward spiral of
divorce, drug use and loss of identity. An 1,100 mile hike of the Pacific Coast
Trail from California to Washington becomes her salvation.
Her decision to solo hike is impulsive and she is unprepared
for its effect on her physically and mentally. While she encounters bears,
snakes and even other hikers, most of her time is spent alone. There is a
pivotal point in the tale where one boot falls from a ledge into the forest and
she must improvise a ‘shoe’. And she does. Charging forward every day, with an
enormous backpack and much fortitude, she never gives up on her pilgrimage to
reinvent herself. At the same time sad and funny, the writing is emotional and
stimulating. A book of survival of the
soul as well as the body.
